If you bank with Banco CTT, the app, homebanking and MB WAY transfers are switched off this weekend. The bank says it is carrying out a planned technology upgrade from Friday 16 to Sunday 18 October 2026, with the affected services back on Monday 19 October. The details are on the bank’s official update page and were confirmed to Lusa (via RTP) by an official source at the bank.
What does not work until Monday
- The Banco CTT app and homebanking.
- Sending and receiving money by MB WAY transfer (phone-to-phone).
- Receiving instant transfers (transferências imediatas).
- Checking your balance and recent movements at ATMs (Multibanco).
What still works
- Cash withdrawals at any ATM in Portugal and abroad, with the usual €400 daily limit.
- Card payments in shops and online, in Portugal and abroad, including contactless, MB WAY payments and digital wallets (Apple Pay, Samsung Pay, Google Pay).
- Normal (non-instant) transfers and transfers made at a Multibanco machine.
- Paying bills and the State (Pagamento ao Estado) and phone top-ups at Multibanco.
What to do this weekend
Expecting money? If your employer, a friend or a family member needs to send you money before Monday, Banco CTT asks you to tell them to use a normal SEPA transfer, not an instant one and not MB WAY. The bank says normal transfers are processed on the usual timescales, so the money may not arrive until the next working day.
Paying rent or splitting bills? You can still pay by card, take cash out at an ATM, or make a transfer from a Multibanco machine. If you usually check your balance in the app, keep receipts for this weekend’s payments so you know what you spent.
Watch out for scams. Outages are a favourite moment for fake bank messages. Banco CTT says that once the upgrade is finished you will not need to update personal data, change passwords, give access codes or reactivate your account. The bank also says it never asks for authentication codes, login details or card data by phone, SMS or email. If you get a message like that, do not click the link. Call the bank’s support line on 212 697 144 instead, and only open the update page through www.bancoctt.pt. We explained other common tricks in our guide to fake police and ASAE phone scams.
Key dates
- Friday 16 October: upgrade started.
- Sunday 18 October: upgrade due to finish.
- Monday 19 October: app, homebanking and MB WAY transfers due back.
The bank says its update page will be refreshed whenever there is new information until all services are back.
